The Confession of a Daughter-In-Law
Mar 01, 2023It was Valentine's Day. Grandma and Grandpa watched the kids so we could have a nice dinner out.
This particular day was fuller than normal [late night preparing Kid's Valentine cards, baking school snacks, and all the other daily things] so needless to say, the house was a mess when Grandma and Grandpa showed up for their kidsitting duties.
While spending quality time together with our girls, they had great conversations and enjoyed playing games, telling jokes, and laughing.
Before we knew it, the night ended and we returned home.
Upon arriving home, my mother-in-law mentioned she couldn't imagine how we can live in this mess. Typically our home is quite tidy, so I can understand the shock.
My husband quickly spoke up and diffused the criticism, but then she went on in disbelief about how our youngest daughter put her fresh, tomorrow's clothes on instead of pajamas!
"How could we ever survive in such unruly chaos," she wondered. She left our house in disbelief.
I have spent years doing internal healing work so I was able to easily brush these comments off.
Somewhat. But, there was still a little nag of judgment bothering me throughout the day.
Of course, my house is a mess, I thought! I have a million little things to do all day, it's a surprise I put my clothes on right most days!
And who makes these pajama laws, anyways? If the clothes are clean for tomorrow and it saves meltdowns in the morning, why not?
I have found ways to calm the chaos of motherhood and I will continue to do so, unapologetically.
So yeah, Grandma, I admit it, she's going to bed in tomorrow's clothes, while sugar plums dance in her head.
